Who
We Are:
Guardian Life of the Caribbean Limited
is the flagship company of the Guardian Holdings Group. GLOC
is proud of a tradition of continuous service that dates back to 1847 when
Standard Life of Edinburgh, Scotland, started doing business in the West Indies.
Standard Life ceased transacting new
business in Trinidad in 1970 and, as a result, merged their Trinidad and Tobago
and Barbados portfolios with that of the Jamaica Mutual Life Assurance Society
effective November 15, 1972. Eight
years later Guardian Life of the Caribbean Limited was established to accept the
Trinidad & Tobago portfolio of Jamaica Mutual in December 1980.
In 2001, Guardian Life of the Caribbean was rated
‘A’ Excellent by A.M. Best, the most prestigious rating agency of insurance
companies worldwide. The rating underscores the GLOC’s commitment to the full
protection of our policyholders by ensuring that our solvency margins remain
generous.
What
We Do:
GLOC is
engaged in the underwriting of all classes of long-term insurance business as
defined in the Insurance Act, 1980, as well as associated investment activities.
The
company continues to lead the field in life insurance underwriting in Trinidad
& Tobago, with
over 70,000 policies, $10.3 billion of total insurance coverage in-force, and
assets under management in excess of $2.3 billion.
The investments of Guardian Life are judiciously
spread among local, regional and foreign securities, and its surplus position in
relation to liabilities is among the strongest in the industry at 34%. In
Trinidad and Tobago, branches are located in Port-of-Spain, Maraval, St.
Augustine, Chaguanas, and San Fernando, with a service centre in Scarborough.
Overseas branch offices are located in Curacao and Aruba.
In spite of a mature local market, growth has been
steady. Total premium income and
profit available to shareholders were $226 million and $60 million respectively
in 2000, both of which have increased at an average 10% per annum over the last
two years.
How We Do It:
Guardian Life’s continued growth
is driven by the following
key initiatives:
(a)
product innovation Guardian Life was the first to launch unit-linked life
and pension contracts, which now dominate new business and has embarked on a
major product development initiative, positioning itself to take advantage of
the shift in market demand from traditional insurance products to savings
products;
(b)
strong and effective agency
distribution system through closer ties with RBTT Financial and insurance
brokers, as well as further development of the Internet channel, and
(c)
pursuit of further operating efficiencies.
